Character
Yanapaccha (5,460m) is one of the most accessible and rewarding climbs in the Cordillera Blanca, often completed in two days from Huaraz. It is considered an ideal “next step” for those who have some basic experience, or for very fit beginners looking for a challenge. It serves as a fantastic peak for acclimatization before tackling major objectives like Alpamayo or Huascaran. Although the approach is short, the climb itself is a true mountaineering experience, involving navigating crevasses and ascending a final, excitingly steep snow and ice face (up to 60-65 degrees). The summit rewards climbers with absolutely breathtaking, close-up views of Chopicalqui, Huascaran, Chacraraju, and Pisco.
Requirements
You must be in excellent health and have a very good level of fitness. While prior climbing experience is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. You need to be strong enough to carry your personal climbing gear and backpack to the moraine camp. This is a physically demanding climb due to the altitude and the steep final section, which will test your strength and endurance. You should not attempt this climb unless you are well-acclimatized. It is crucial to have spent several days at altitude (e.g., in Huaraz) and completed at least one or two acclimatization hikes (like Laguna 69 or Laguna Churup) before starting. Climbing over 5000m requires your body to be prepared for the lower oxygen levels.
Best Season
The prime climbing season for Yanapaccha is during the Andean dry season, from May to September. This period offers the most stable weather, with generally clear skies and sunny days. Conditions outside of these months can be unpredictable. Be prepared for cold temperatures, especially during the alpine start for the summit push. Night temperatures on the mountain can easily drop to -10°C (14°F).

- Tips (optional)
Day 1: Huaraz → Llanganuco Valley → Yanapaccha Moraine Camp (4900m)
We’ll depart from Huaraz in the morning for a scenic 3.5-hour drive that takes us through the spectacular Llanganuco Valley. The route winds past the famous turquoise lakes of Chinancocha and Orconcocha, climbing up to the trailhead near the Portachuelo de Llanganuco pass. From there, we begin a 2 to 2.5-hour hike up a rocky moraine ridge to our campsite, situated at approximately 4,900 meters. After setting up camp, we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the imposing Chacraraju peak as the sun sets.
Day 2: Yanapaccha Summit (5460m) → Return to Huaraz
Our summit day begins with an early alpine start, around 1:00 or 2:00 AM. Following a light breakfast and a final gear check from our guide, we will make our way onto the glacier. We will travel roped-up across the glacier field to the base of the main face. Using technical ice axes, we’ll then climb the final, thrilling 200-meter ice wall to the summit (5460m). The reward is an incredible panoramic view. Our descent will involve a few rappels down the steepest sections before we carefully make our way back to camp. After packing up, we will hike back down to the road where our vehicle will be waiting to drive us back to Huaraz, arriving late in the afternoon.

Equipment
Please read carefully through the required equipment list. Missing equipment can be rented from us at a reasonable price. You will review your gear again with your guide in Huaraz before departing for the Yanapaccha climb.
Meals
During the climb, we pay attention to a healthy and high-calorie diet. For lunch on the first day, a box lunch is served. We can prepare vegetarian dishes and accommodate other dietary restrictions upon request.
Transport
We use minivans or comfortable 4×4 off-road vehicles, depending on the group size, for the drive from Huaraz to the trailhead in the Llanganuco Valley.
Porters
It is necessary to carry all equipment from the vehicle up to the Moraine Camp. The trail is a steep and rocky hike up the moraine which is demanding due to the high altitude. Our crew (porters and/or guides) will carry the tents, food, and climbing ropes, but you need to carry your own personal gear. You must have a backpack large enough for your sleeping bag, mat, personal clothing, and technical climbing equipment.
