Dayhike to Laguna 69

The Laguna 69 is located at the base of the Chacraraju mountain (6100m), which is one of the most beautiful and most difficult mountains to climb in the Cordillera Blanca. The trek also offers great views of other mountains such as Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Yanapaqcha and Pisco. On the way up to the lake you will encounter a variety of flora, waterfalls and other small lakes. The trek is considered slightly difficult due to its high altitude (4650m).

Highlights

  • Optimal acclimatization tour
  • See the famous Llanganuco lakes
  • Unique turquoise blue glacier lake
  • Beautiful views in the Cordillera Blanca

Character
The Cordillera Blanca is the largest mountain range of Peru with 31 peaks over 6,000 meter high. More than half of the Peruvian highest 6,000m peaks are here, including the highest mountain (Huascaran) and the most beautiful mountain (Alpamayo) of Peru. The Laguna 69 trek starts from the famous Llanganuco valley and is one of the most popular dayhikes from Huaraz.

Requirements
You are healthy and have a good condition. The trail is not too difficult but has a steep section before reaching the lake.

Best Season
The best trekking season in the Andes is from April to October, with rainy season in between. It is usually sunny and warm during this time. Due to the altitude, the nights can be quite cold (to minus 5 ° C).

Day 1: Dayhike to Laguna 69

You are picked up in your hotel and we drive north following the course of the Rio Santa that divides the Cordillera Blanca in the east and the Cordillera Negra in the west. We pass traditional Andean towns and enjoy the magnificent view of the high peaks of the Cordillera Blanca range including Huascaran (6768m), Peru’s highest mountain. As we enter the Huascaran National Park, we continue our drive up this beautiful valley. Our first stop is at Llanganuco lake where we have breakfast. After another 20 minutes of driving our bus stops and we start hiking up to the Laguna 69. This hike will take about 3 hours of steep ascending. After having lunch at the lake we hike back down the same trail. Our transport brings us back to Huaraz.

Frequenly asked questions

How many days should I get used to the altitude before the Laguna 69 trek?

The time required varies from person to person. If you already have high altitude experience, your body may become acclimated faster. We recommend spending at least 2 days in Huaraz or doing easy activities in the area.

If the icy cold water does not bother you, you are welcome to jump into the lake 🙂 It is certainly a unique experience and leaves great memories.

This hike can be done easily in the rainy season. In addition, the vegetation is especially beautiful and green at this time. In the morning, it is often sunny and the clouds do not gather until noon. The rain comes in the afternoon at about 4 o’clock. In the rainy season, therefore, we usually leave a little earlier in the morning.
