Huayhuash Mini Trek

On this route you will see a small but very beautiful part of the Huayhuash range. Especially you will have magnificent views from the Jahuacocha lake which is one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole range. This route is a good option for people who don’t have a lot of time but still want to have a great experience.

Highlights:

  • Cordillera Huayhuash – one of the most beautiful treks in the world
  • Untouched mountain landscapes, intensely glaciated
  • Dreamlike campsites you will remember forever

Character
This small and easier route of the Cordillera Huayhuash trek lasts 4 days.

Requirements
Surefootedness, a head for heights, a good physical condition, team spirit and willingness to leave your comfort zone. You should have hiked in the mountains already. In preparation for this trip, we recommend conditioning and extensive walks. The hiking times per day are between 4 to 7 hours and can vary depending on the condition of the group and weather.

Best Season
The best trekking season in the Andes is from April to October, with rainy season in between. It is usually sunny and warm during this time. Due to the altitude, the nights can be quite cold (to minus 5 ° C).

Individual connection programs with Machu Picchu, Colca Canyon and much more are possible. Contact us!

Day 1 Huaraz - Llamac - Rondoy Camp

We pick you up in your hotel and drive through the villages of Chiquian und Llamac, which is the gateway to the Cordillera Huayhuash. We meet our donkey driver and donkeys and start hiking towards the Rondoy valley and have first views of the snow-capped peaks. We set camp at 4’200m.

After breakfast we hike up towards Sambunya pass (40750m). From the pass we enjoy the most spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks and glacier lakes. Then we descend to one of the most beautiful campsites of the Huayhuash range, Jahuacocha.

Today we hike high up the Yaucha pass (4’850m), where we can enjoy the spectacular views of surrounding peaks such as Yerupaja, the second highest mountain in the Peruvian Andes. Then we have a steep and difficult descend to Ancoscancha campsite (4’550m).

We leave early from our campsite and climb up on a steep trail to Pampa Llamac (4’200m). After enjoying the last views to the Huayhuash range and take some last pictures, we descend down a steep trail to the village of Llamac. Our transportation is waiting for us to bring us back to Huaraz.

Jahuacocha Campsite

Camping
During the trek, you spend the night in two-person tents. The selection of camp sites depends on the reachable water points and takes into account – as far as possible – scenic spots. In the Cordillera Huayhuash there are countless dream camps on highland lakes at the feet of snow-capped peaks.

Meals
During the trek we pay attention to a healthy and high-calorie diet. Breakfast and dinner are cooked warm. For lunch, a box lunch is served. We can prepare vegetarian dishes on request.

Transport
We use minivans or comfortable 4×4 off-road vehicles, depending on the group size.

Luggage
Donkeys carry your luggage during the trek, you only carry your daypack.

Frequenly asked questions

How do I prevent altitude sickness?

Some basic rules:

  • Do not climb too fast, allow several days for a gradual acclimatization
  • It can be very useful to take a break at around 3,000 m for a few days
  • Drink more than enough water
  • Do not drink any alcohol
  • Cure infections and other diseases beforehand
  • Do not take sleeping pills
  • Carbohydrate-containing foods, as they consume less oxygen than fats and proteins
  • Drink coca tea or chew coca leaves
