Laguna Rocotuyoc Hike Day Tour

Without a doubt, the tour to Laguna Rocotuyoc (4550 meters above sea level) will be one of the most fascinating for you, as it is a new circuit and, above all, rarely visited. Whether the sky is cloudy or clear, its waters always reflect an intense emerald blue, surrounded by snow-capped peaks such as Paccharaju, Bayoraju, and Copa. Additionally, a horizontal path leads to the Frozen Lagoon where we can get very close to the glacier. If we go by minivan, the transport reaches just a few meters from Laguna Rocotuyoc through the Paccharuri ravine. Along the way, we can also see various rock paintings, as well as magnificent waterfalls.

Itinerary

Day 1:Huaraz – Vicos – Quebrada Pacharuri – Laguna Rocotuyoc y Congelada – Huaraz

By vehicle, we head to the north side of Huaraz to the town of Marcará, where we will take a detour east to enter the territory of the Vicos community and then enter Huascarán National Park. Further ahead, we arrive at Paqcharuri, a charming place known for its icy waterfalls, and we will also visit some rock paintings in Llamaruri; then we ascend by vehicle to Laguna Rocotuyoc. From the lagoon, we get splendid views of the surrounding mountains, and after a short stop, we can take a relaxing, almost flat walk to reach the Frozen Lagoon, which is characterized by being next to the glacier and having chunks of ice floating on its waters. After a reasonable amount of time, we return to Rocotuyoc and take our vehicle back to Huaraz.

FAQ

? What should I bring for this trek?

You should bring appropriate layered clothing (thermal clothing, waterproof jacket, trekking pants), hat, gloves, scarf, sunscreen, sunglasses, water (2 liters minimum), energy snacks, picnic lunch, camera, and trekking poles (optional but recommended). It is also important to bring a comfortable 25-30 liter backpack. Breakfast is not included, so you should have it in Huaraz before leaving.

? What is the best time to do this trek?

The best time to do the 3 Lagoons trek is during the dry season, from May to September, when the days are sunny and rainfall is scarce. During these months, the trails are in better condition and the views of the lagoons and mountains are spectacular. Outside of this season (October to April), it is possible to do the trek, but there is a higher chance of rain and slippery trails. We always check the weather conditions before each outing.
