The route is suitable only for people with hiking experience and good physical condition to walk on vertical and zigzagging trails.

Itinerary

Day 1:Huaraz – Chawin – Lagunas Radian, Laguna Mullaca y Carhuac – Huaraz

6:00 am Departure from Huaraz with the private vehicle, heading northeast along the road leading to the town of Chawin, about 15 minutes on paved road and another 30 minutes on dirt road. The hike begins at an altitude of 3750 meters above sea level; first, we will reach Laguna Radián (3885 meters above sea level), which is small but serves as a mirror of water for getting impressive views of the mountains of almost the entire Cordillera Blanca. After a short break and taking some photos, we will continue along a path parallel to a Pre-Inca water channel, passing through forests of Quenuales and a zigzag ascent with waterfalls and streams until reaching Laguna Mullaca, better known as Carhuac by the local people. From here, we get a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape, the glacier of Vallunaraju, and the extensive valley of the Callejón de Huaylas.

FAQ

? What level of physical condition do I need for the 3 Lakes trek?

The 3 Lakes trek (Churup, Llaca and Churupita) is of moderate to demanding difficulty. Daily hikes are 3 to 5 hours on irregular terrain with steep ascents, reaching altitudes between 4,450 m and 4,850 m. Good physical condition, basic experience in high-altitude hiking, and proper acclimatization in Huaraz (minimum 2 days prior) are required. We recommend bringing trekking poles to facilitate the ascent and descent.

? What should I bring for this trek?

You should bring appropriate layered clothing (thermal clothing, waterproof jacket, trekking pants), hat, gloves, scarf, sunscreen, sunglasses, water (2 liters minimum), energy snacks, picnic lunch, camera, and trekking poles (optional but recommended). It is also important to bring a comfortable 25-30 liter backpack. Breakfast is not included, so you should have it in Huaraz before leaving.

? What is the best time to do this trek?

The best time to do the 3 Lagoons trek is during the dry season, from May to September, when the days are sunny and rainfall is scarce. During these months, the trails are in better condition and the views of the lagoons and mountains are spectacular. Outside of this season (October to April), it is possible to do the trek, but there is a higher chance of rain and slippery trails. We always check the weather conditions before each outing.
