Hike to the famous rainbow mountain

Near Cusco is the mountain called Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain, which has a special geological phenomenon. The rust-red, beige and green discolorations arose millions of years ago through layers of sediment that were pushed upwards by plate tectonics. In this case, iron oxide has led to the reddish coloration, magnesium to the lighter pinks, and a reaction of copper with water and oxygen to the blue-green discoloration. This recently discovered mountain is a highlight of any trip to Peru.
